Pancho Villa State Park – Columbus, New Mexico

On our way to City of Rocks State Park in New Mexico we thought we would stop by Columbus and check out the state park. Columbus lies on the Mexican border next to Puerrto Palomas, Mexico.  If you cross the border don’t miss “The Pink Store”, you can sip a margarita while you shop! Now that’s my kind of shopping!

The visitors center has a very nice museum full of historical information, photographs, exhibits, and artifacts. We ended up spending much more time there than anticipated.  First you have all the information regarding the raid on Columbus by Pancho Villa and his gang of over 500 men in 1916 where over 70 people were killed.

Columbus is also known for it’s gun smuggling scandal in 2011 where 11 city government officials, including the mayor, were indicted. Ten pleaded guilty and one is still at large. Quite a lot has happened in this small, sleepy border town.

The campground looks like a regular campground. It was extremely hazy when we were there but the person working in the visitor’s center remarked about what a clear day it was. Hmmm…I guess it could be worse?
