Willard Bay - Utah

Willard Bay in the Great Salt Lake as seen from Willard Bay State Park

This year we stayed at Willow Creek Campground and last year we stayed next door at Cottonwood Campground. Both campgrounds are part of Willard Bay State Park and are located directly off I-15 just north of Salt Lake City. A perfect location for an overnighter with easy access.

Willow Creek Campground

Cottonwood has full hookups and Willow Creek is all dry camping but with less interstate noise.  There is still highway noise but nothing like Cottonwood which is closer to the freeway.  We did a walk around of Willow Creek last year and thought we would enjoy it better and we did.

Since last year several of the very nice, waterfront, spacious sites at Willow Creek are now considered double sites which require double fees so we passed on some of our favorite sites and opted for a single site instead.

Campground: Willow Creek Campground
Location: Willard, Utah
Site: 14
Cost: $20
Services: None
Comments: A lovely dry camping campground with large, spacious sites. Road into the campground is a bit narrow in places and might be difficult in a big rig if the campground is crowded and extra vehicles are parked in the road.

The camp host told us that Cottonwood Campground has been full every weekend since last March.  We think it is a weekend destination campground for the locals, i.e., Salt Lake City. Still either campground is pleasant enough for an overnighter with nice views of the Great Salt Lake and a few small hiking trails down to the water.

This visit, in September, we encountered lots of mosquitoes at dusk, enough to prevent me from staying out and capturing a terrific sunset shot. Oh well. Last year we visited at the end of October and didn’t have any mosquitoes.
