River Park Campground – Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

Welcome to Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan, “The Friendly City”!

We drove from Brandon, Manitoba to Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan along the Trans Canada Highway enjoying the beautiful scenery of the prairies. We passed many small towns each with their own interesting history. The first stop for us was Grenfell which has a collection of miniature replica grain elevators at their tourist information building. There is also the town of Sintaluta which is known as the first area to start farmer owned grain companies on the prairies and was home to the largest shipping point of grain in western Canada. It is also home to the 1901 incident known as the “The Box Car Caper” of which there is a movie made called “The Long Haul”. Another town is Indian Head which is known for a variety of things but one is the location for the filming of the Canadian TV Show “Little Mosque on the Prairie”. Then on through Regina which is the capital of Saskatchewan.

The beautiful canola fields of Saskatchewan

Then on to Moose Jaw and to our campground by way of the Snowbirds Expressway. The Snowbirds are the military aerobatics and air flight demonstration team of the Royal Canadian Air Force and are based in Moose Jaw. We were lucky enough to see, by chance, a practice performance during a campout in Alberta a few years ago where they flew over our campground. It was quite the show!

Comments: A tired yet functional campground along the Moose Jaw River. It sits across the street from a lovely park, The Wakamow Valley, and is about one mile to the downtown section of Moose Jaw.

We were in town visiting our nephew and had a lovely dinner with him and a great tour of the city. The city is rumored to have connections with Al Capone running booze through the underground tunnels. There is a motel named after him and tunnel tours re-enacting the good ole bootlegging days of the 1920’s. The Moose Jaw visitor center is home to Mac The Moose which currently had it’s antlers removed to make them taller so that Moose Jaw would have the tallest moose in the world and beat out Storelgen, Norway who currently holds the record. A great little city with a variety of attractions and some nice restaurants.
