Haunted Hueston – Hueston Woods State Park, Ohio

We had a chance to visit Hueston Woods State Park in southwest Ohio this fall. A beautiful time of year to be traveling in the mid west with all the color of the leaves and the crisp sunny days. I used to visit Hueston Woods as a child for family weekend gatherings at the lodge, camping in the woods, and sailing on the lake. Ahh…childhood memories.

Hueston Woods State Park is located in College Corner, Ohio just about 10 minutes north of the town of Oxford known for Miami University.  The state park is about 3,000 acres and includes the 625-acre Acton Lake with a marina with boat rentals (10 HP limit), a campground with over 200 sites, cabins, a lodge, hiking and biking trails, horse back riding, disc golf, golfing, and fishing to name just a few.  The park is open in the winter and provides a host of activities such as cross-country skiing, sledding, ice skating, and  ice fishing, There are even some covered bridges in the area.

There are four camping areas in the campground at the State Park, some with electric sites and some without.  Plenty of room for big rigs and many tent sites also. There is a dump station located at the campground. The sites are a bit close together for our liking but the scenery is beautiful, especially in the autumn.  One of the fun events at the campground during the month of October is the Halloween Fest Campout which is one of the biggest trick-or-treat events in the area.  The campers decorate their sites for Halloween and host trick-or-treat events where they close down the campground roads for a few hours, there are haunted trails with costumed actors, and even a no-scare trail for the young ones.  The event occurs over 3 weekends so there is plenty of time to join in the fun.

The college town of Oxford, with a population of approximately 20,000, is a short drive away and is full of charm, restaurants, and beautiful houses. Definitely worth of a visit to get a small town college feel. The university is home to the national offices of five Greek letter organizations and has a beautiful campus.

  1. Fall in the east is so pretty with the soft maples and their brilliant red leaves. The yellows were never very impressive which is why I am so excited about the aspen out here. They are so bright they heard your eyes.

They do get into Halloween don’t they!!
