Moose Creek Flat Campground – Gallatin, Montana

Moose Creek Flat Campground is a National Forest campground and is in Big Sky Country nestled in the canyon along the Gallatin River not far from Big Sky, Montana.

It is a very small campground with 10 reservable sites of which some are back-in, some are pull thru, and one is a pull along (our site).

The campground as seen from our site – looking towards the entrance – with 2 pull thru’s on the right and the back-ins on the left along the river

Campground: Moose Creek Flat Campground
Location: Gallatin, Montana in the Custer Gallatin National Forest
Site: 10 – a large pull along site on the river
Cost: $14 (50% off with Interagency Pass)
Services: dry camping
Comments: The campground sits right off Highway 191 (west side), which runs between I-90 at Belgrade and West Yellowstone, and can be quite busy and noisy.  During the day the traffic was non-stop but evenings were peaceful and quiet.  The sound of the river rushing by helped drown out the traffic noise.

There is small beach behind site 4 with easy river access and a bit of sand. There is also a day use area with some nice big rocks to sit on and watch the river flow by.

Just south of the campground is Montana Whitewater rafting where raft tours start. The rafting tours would raft by our site a few times a day where we could watch them or we could also walk down to the beach and watch them. The river was pretty low in August but they still managed to have a good time even if they did get stuck on a few rocks!!

For a few nights this campground made for great access to Big Sky and also made for great sleeping due to the proximity to the river and the wonderful soothing sound of the rapids.
