Volunteer Work -Farragut State Park – Athol, Idaho

It’s that time of year again. Time to do some volunteer work at an Idaho State Park, Farragut State Park to be exact. We like to give back to the community that has been so generous to us all these years.

In previous years we were campground hosts where we lived in the campground, cleaned campsites, sold firewood, and helped campers with whatever they needed. This year we worked relief jobs for the campground hosts on their days off. We parked in a volunteer area away from the campground and went to work at the campgrounds cleaning campsites. We thoroughly enjoyed the summer.

We had a lovely campsite where we planted some flowers and had our campfire breakfasts and dinners now and then. It was quiet and peaceful with great neighbors (other volunteers) for socializing and maybe a few parties???

We even had a disc golf basket behind our campsite to practice our disk golf shots!

There are four main campgrounds in the park and we covered two of the campgrounds. We would drive there daily in a park owned UTV and make the rounds cleaning campsites for those campers who had checked out. This consisting of cleaning the firepit, cleaning the picnic table, raking the gravel, picking up any debris, and sweeping the tent pad border.

There were also various other tasks we could work on if we had any spare time. Trash pickup along the road, the boat launch, the swimming beach, the day use areas, and the viewpoint was always something we could work on along with loping branches and weed whacking not only campsites but trails. We even checked the dog waste stations weekly to ensure there were bags available to hikers/campers. There was always something to be done.

In the end we both wore out our Blundstone boots we purchased in Australia…hmm…in the trash they went! Sad. The soles just disintegrated and since they are injection molded soles that it is difficult to resole them. We had a pair resoled years ago and it cost hundreds of dollars and they were just never the same. Why do we keep buying them? Not anymore.

And we made note of all the site post tags for the sites we had cleaned.

There were a number of events at the park with ribbon cutting ceremonies, musical entertainment, car shows, and disc golf events to name a few. That meant we would help out with whatever help was needed.

But we DID have some time off where we could enjoy ourselves for a bit of hiking and biking.

And we managed to get into town and visit our previous neighbors (since we lived in the area for many years) and visit our old stomping grounds.

We had an absolutely terrific time and can’t wait to return.

Until we meet again…toodle-oo.
